VP announces new release of UCCE positions

Dear Colleagues,

I am happy to announce the release of 26 academic positions (http://ucanr.edu/sites/anrstaff/files/253192.pdf) for a new round of hiring over the next 2 years.

These positions are now in the queue and will be released for recruitment in phases as we continue recruiting for more than 25 specialist and advisor positions yet unfilled from the 2014 process. This new release continues our commitment for hiring to exceed projected turnover, thus achieving our goal of academic growth. And, as funding becomes available, we will consider additional positions.

At present, we are also exploring the opportunities to expand academic numbers using non-traditional funding models, such as sharing positions and leveraging resources with public and private partners. Furthermore, given that needs change and new challenges emerge that must be addressed quickly, we are optimistic we have some flexibility to react to new needs.

I want to thank Program Council, UC ANR academics, county and REC directors, program directors and our stakeholders for the time and effort everyone has put into identifying position needs for the future and helping to prioritize those needs. It is a lengthy process, but one that is critical to the future direction and impact of UC ANR. Given that more than 130 positions were submitted (http://ucanr.edu/sites/anrstaff/Divisionwide_Planning/2016_Call_for_Position), you can imagine the task that Program Council had in making recommendations to me.

After receiving their recommendations, I carefully considered the projected budgets, current expenditures associated with new academic hires, the commitment to increasing our academic footprint, and our goal of ensuring that salaries of current and future academics are competitive so that we recruit and retain the very best for our UC ANR programs.

Again, thank you all for your contributions to this effort! Like you, I look forward to welcoming our new colleagues!

Sincerely,

Glenda

Vice President

Travel funds available for CE specialists to collaborate with CE advisors

ANR will be making additional travel support available for UC Cooperative Extension specialists to collaborate with UCCE advisors in FY 2016/17. With the level of funds available, each specialist may apply for up to $2,500 for FY 2016/17 (funds must be expended by June 30, 2017). These travel funds must be utilized by the UCCE specialists only and cannot be used for out-of-state travel.

Completing a short online survey is the only step in accessing these funds.

A brief survey form will be accessible from your ANR Portal. The survey will ask

  • Name and title of specialist requesting support
  • Project/Program name
  • Brief project description (one paragraph)
  • Collaborating advisors

While there is no deadline for applications for these travel funds, they must be expended in the current fiscal year. We are pleased that we are able to take this step to assist in meeting an identified need.

UCCE specialists may apply for funds directly at http://ucanr.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=18400.

Associate Vice President

Thank you for making our May 8 UCCE centennial celebration a success

Dear Colleagues,

I want to thank all of you for your hard work to make our May 8 UC Cooperative Extension centennial celebration a success statewide. I am so impressed with the way everyone in the Division pulled together and got our partners involved in publicizing the Be a Scientist project and the local events in the counties. We had a tremendous response.

Several news stories about UC Cooperative Extension appeared in newspapers, online, TV and radio outlets. You can see a summary at http://ucanr.edu/sites/anrstaff/?blogpost=13885&blogasset=544 and a list of stories at http://100.ucanr.edu/Media/News_Media.

We held local events in 21 counties where we celebrated our partnerships with local officials, community groups, Farm Bureau members and other stakeholders, who are so important to the success of UC Cooperative Extension. People at these events also participated in the Be a Scientist project, counting pollinators, mapping local sites where food is grown and telling us how they conserve water.

As of Thursday night, 27,693 people had contributed to the crowd-sourced data. You can see their data and photos by clicking on the datapoints on the maps at beascientist.ucanr.edu.

On Twitter, we trended the #CE100 hashtag and @ucanr at the national level for a brief period in the afternoon and trended #beascientist in California for most of the day. We reached nearly 400,000 Twitter accounts for 1,394,997 impressions with tweeting and retweeting from colleagues and friends in California, and outside of the state. Even the White House Food Initiative (@ObamaFoodorama) tweeted about #BeaScientist.

We will continue to celebrate the UC Cooperative Extension centennial throughout the year. I look forward to continuing to leverage the centennial to raise awareness of the many ways ANR's work benefits Californians.

Vice President

Support the May 8 project with social media

We need your help! With one week to go before our May 8 Day of Science and Service, we need your help to encourage people throughout California to participate. One easy way to do this is to join our Thunderclap campaign: https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/10528-beascientist

Once we get 100 sign-ups, it will activate a social media blast on May 8 to our Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr accounts. If you sign up, the following message will be sent on May 8 to your friends and followers:

"On May 8, 2014, join the University of California in a one-day science project and record your observations. http://thndr.it/1gHH3XS"

If you like, you can customize your message. For example, you may send it in a different language.

It takes just a couple of minutes to sign up. Join @vpallendiaz, @wefrost and dozens of other cool people in supporting the Thunderclap campaign for the UC Cooperative Extension centennial May 8 Day of Science and Service.

Thank you!

Help UCCE celebrate centennial with May 8 Day of Science and Service

Our May 8 Day of Science and Service is quickly approaching. Help us create buzz!

How can you participate? I'm so glad you asked!

  1. Plan a local activity on your campus, REC or county office. Coordinate a community pollinator walk, visit a local school and teach about water conservation, or have an open house at your demonstration garden and add it to our California food map. Watch our webinar to get more ideas:  http://ucanr.edu/sites/100brand/Day_of_Science_and_Service.
  1. Have kids or work at a school? Reach out to teachers, or principals, and have them do a classroom activity related to one of our questions. Download our lesson plans to share with them, under “Partner Outreach” at http://ucanr.edu/sites/100brand/Day_of_Science_and_Service.
  1. Reach out to your local partners and networks. Spread the word! We're relying on you to conduct outreach at the local level. Use our partner letters, press release, postcards and fact sheets to help in your outreach efforts.
  1. Visit beascientist.ucanr.edu and add your data to our maps. Add your dot to the map now to familiarize yourself with the process, (and to help us look more popular on May 8, of course).
  1. Join our social media campaign on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or Instagram! Use the hashtag #beascientist to join the conversation and spread the word.

Together, we can help thousands of Californians feel more connected to the research we do every day. Help us celebrate our UCCE centennial by joining in on the fun today!
